Roger McGuinn Tried to Sway Metallica on Downloads - Spinner:

Metallica might not have faced a well-publicized fan backlash had the band listened to former Byrds frontman Roger McGuinn. When Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich was set to testify before Congress against file sharing back in 2000, McGuinn tells Spinner that he tried to convince Ulrich that downloads were the future.

“I talked to Lars, but he didn’t seem to get it,” says McGuinn, who presented Congress with counter testimony immediately after Metallica. “He was still firmly on the side of the record companies, thinking that people were ripping him off. My attitude was like, ‘Hey — it’s the new radio.’ You guys ought to be glad when people exploit your stuff and get it around because that means they’re going to come to your concerts and buy your merchandise, and you’ll make a lot more money that way.”…..

The current pandemic of Swine Flu has claimed less than 3,000 lives. Well… that’s still pretty bad, right? After all, that’s like a flu-caused 9/11. Then again, the ordinary flu, that gives us the sniffles every year? That one kills several hundred thousand people around the world.

The reason for the early panic is that they believed this virus was a descendant of the 1918 Spanish Flu that wiped out a jaw-dropping 50-million people. And while it was obviously not as deadly, the fear was that it would eventually mutate into something like its apocalyptic ancestor.

Also, it’s got a scary name.

It hasn’t lived up to it. Even the World Health Organization is describing this as a “moderate” outbreak. Their advice? Same as with the regular flu. Babies and old people should get vaccinated. The rest of your should wash your hands and stay away from sick people.

Channel hopping can be a shocking thing. I mean the last thing you expect to see on TV on a Saturday morning is someone wearing a pair of underpants with a great big bulge down the front that wriggles about suggestively. Granted these y-fronts were being worn by a puppet hyena called Sniff but if anything that made it all the more shocking. The perversion was exasserbated by the hyena’s groaning and his partner Scratch asking the kiddies at home to guess what was down his underpants. According to Scratch’s clues it was long, hairy, wriggly and had sharp teeth.

Answers on a postcard to ITV’s Scratch and Sniff’s Den of Doom…

Maybe consider sending another separate postcard to media regulatory body, Ofcom.

I accidentally scratched a spot on the side of my face. It was a small unassuming thing, had no real agenda and could’ve quietly be left alone to fade away unnoticed, had it not taken my actions as a deliberate hostile attack. In retaliation it has tripled in size, gone big and red and sore and has no intentions of disappearing quietly.

I’ve finished watching a repeat of Richard Dawkins’s The Genius of Charles Darwin, The Fifth Ape. I never caught it the first time around. In this episode Dawkins was trying understand how kindness and morality fits in with Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution.

Part of the reason, Dawkins says, comes from kin selection, where an animal will sacrifice itself or its safety in order to ensure the survival of its relatives, and the ongoing survival of its DNA.

The other reason for this relates back to Dawkins’s own work on the Selfish Gene. He says under various circumstances an organism will commit acts of kindness in order to receive some sort of benefit from it in the future. A sort of quid pro quo, you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours kind of deal. In smaller social groups this made sense as the benefits of this exchange could be received back directly, but Dawkins wanted to know why this instinct to be kind to others is there for complete strangers. Why should we do something to help an anonymous person by donating something to charity, when we will receive nothing in return? This is of no benefit to the survival of the genes of that individual, yet those strong stirrings of compassion are still there.

Dawkins concluded that this was an example of our selfish genes misfiring. That this instinct to help others is something left over from when our ancestors lived in much tighter and smaller groups, but really serves no useful function for the survival of that individual.

This is where I disagree with Richard Dawkins.

I believe that as the human species has developed much larger and more complex societies than our ape like ancestors, maybe the genes are evolving with it. Just because helping a stranger in trouble, or giving money to a charity has no obvious benefit to you and the survival of your genes, it doesn’t mean that the gene isn’t acting in some selfish way of looking after you. Perhaps on some genetic level it recognises that society as a whole must function on a level of co-operation, understanding and compassion. That the well being and survival of your own genes relies on the well being of the society that you live in. After all, you wouldn’t want your offspring to grow up in a lawless and violent society would you?

But then again, I’m not an evolutionary biologist so what do I know?

Thought not.

But I was thinking very differently when I was watching his show the other night. Through my typical paranoia I began to wonder if Derren Brown was using his mind control tricks into making us lust for him during that broadcast. It was subtle to begin with but as I was tuning in I couldn’t help but feel I was being turned on.

In that episode he showed us how he convinced Simon Pegg to believe that he always dreamed of receiving a BMX bike as a gift. He did this by dropping subtle hints in his sentences, swapping words such as ‘like’ with ‘bike’ as he was talking to him.

Was he pulling a similar trick on the audience? Was there going to be a slightly cruel but humorous revelation at the end of the show that he had been manipulating us into fancying him all along? It would give any homophobes watching something to think about. That would make a much better point than the movie Bruno did, which only gave homophobes something to laugh at…forgive the slight digression but that movie irked me.

When there was no revelation of hypnotic seduction at the end of the show I wasn’t sure if I should be disappointed or glad. Perhaps I was being paranoid after all. But, after doing some google image searches for him today, and not finding one image that stirred up those same feelings of sexual lust, I’m convinced something is up.

I’m onto you Derren Brown… or should that be ‘into’?
