Is this an image of a sexy man?
Thought not.
But I was thinking very differently when I was watching his show the other night. Through my typical paranoia I began to wonder if Derren Brown was using his mind control tricks into making us lust for him during that broadcast. It was subtle to begin with but as I was tuning in I couldn’t help but feel I was being turned on.
In that episode he showed us how he convinced Simon Pegg to believe that he always dreamed of receiving a BMX bike as a gift. He did this by dropping subtle hints in his sentences, swapping words such as ‘like’ with ‘bike’ as he was talking to him.
Was he pulling a similar trick on the audience? Was there going to be a slightly cruel but humorous revelation at the end of the show that he had been manipulating us into fancying him all along? It would give any homophobes watching something to think about. That would make a much better point than the movie Bruno did, which only gave homophobes something to laugh at…forgive the slight digression but that movie irked me.
When there was no revelation of hypnotic seduction at the end of the show I wasn’t sure if I should be disappointed or glad. Perhaps I was being paranoid after all. But, after doing some google image searches for him today, and not finding one image that stirred up those same feelings of sexual lust, I’m convinced something is up.
I’m onto you Derren Brown… or should that be ‘into’?
